Why standardizing fertilization procedures is an important challenge for cooperatives, and the role a shared technical process plays in sustainable farming.

A cooperative typically consists of dozens, sometimes hundreds, of farming households growing the same crop on the same land. Yet if you ask each household how much fertilizer they use, when they apply it, and what type they use, the answers are almost always different. Each household has its own habits, shaped over years of word-of-mouth experience — no one is entirely wrong, but no two are exactly alike either. This is precisely the sticking point for many cooperatives, even when output itself is not lacking.

Why the lack of standardization is a major challenge

When each household farms in its own way, the harvest from within a single cooperative also varies in quality, even though the crop variety and land are the same. This creates difficulties when a cooperative wants to aggregate large volumes to sell to purchasing enterprises, since buyers typically require a consistent quality standard and won't accept batches that are good one time and poor the next. The absence of a shared process also makes it harder for cooperatives to meet traceability requirements or growing-area codes, which are increasingly becoming mandatory conditions for export, especially for products currently under tighter quality controls.

Where standardization begins

Standardization does not mean forcing every household to farm in exactly the same way regardless of differing soil conditions; rather, it means agreeing on a common framework of principles that everyone can adjust from. For fertilization, the framework commonly used in agricultural extension programs is applying the right number of times, at the right time, with the right type, the right amount, and in the right way — often summarized as "four rights and one sufficient." From this framework, a cooperative can build a reference dosage table based on tree age and the specific soil type of its area, giving households a common reference point instead of each person applying a number based on guesswork.

In addition, keeping a farming log — recording when fertilizer was applied, what type, and how much — is simple but often overlooked at the household scale. Yet this is exactly the foundational data needed later for traceability or for adjusting the process when necessary.

The role of stable inputs in the standardization process

Across the entire farming chain, input quality is the factor that is easiest to control yet also the easiest to overlook. When each household in a cooperative buys a different, unverified fertilizer from the open market, input quality is already inconsistent from the very first step, even before technique comes into play. Agreeing to use a single, quality-standard fertilizer source together with a shared reference dosage framework removes one major variable from the standardization equation.

This is also why LAFCO holds in-person training sessions with cooperatives — not only to introduce its products, but also to pass on a shared fertilization technical framework, from the "four rights and one sufficient" principle down to specific dosage tables for each growth stage, so that households within the same cooperative have an identical reference document.

The benefits of a standardized process

When households apply the same technical framework, produce quality across the cooperative becomes more consistent, and traceability and compliance with growing-area codes become far easier than when each household does things its own way. The cooperative gains a stronger negotiating position when signing large-volume contracts with purchasing enterprises, since it can commit to a clear quality standard instead of making empty promises. This is also the foundation needed if a cooperative wants to pursue certifications such as VietGAP in the future.

This is a long-term process, not something completed in a single training session

Standardizing a process cannot be completed after just one training session, because farming habits built up over many years cannot change overnight. It requires ongoing support across multiple crop cycles, monitoring actual results, and adjusting the technical framework to suit each specific area, rather than imposing a rigid formula and leaving it at that. For cooperatives just beginning this journey, what matters is not getting it exactly right from the very first crop, but having a common starting point the whole group can move forward from together.
