Coffee and Cadmium: Regulations Already in Place, Even Though the Risk Hasn't Erupted
While durian has been drawing attention over cadmium contamination, few people notice that coffee — Vietnam's flagship agricultural export — is also subject to this same control in its largest export market. The difference is that coffee has never faced a large-scale warning or rejection wave the way durian is currently experiencing.
Cadmium in Coffee: Clearly Regulated, Not a Vague Risk
The European Union sets a specific maximum limit for cadmium in coffee under its regulation on maximum levels for contaminants in food, Regulation (EU) 2023/915. This isn't a general warning — it's a technical threshold that can cause a shipment to be rejected if exceeded. Coffee plants, both Arabica and Robusta, are capable of absorbing cadmium from the soil during growth, and volcanic, high-altitude coffee-growing regions such as Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and parts of Central America have been documented to have naturally higher cadmium levels in their beans compared to other growing areas. In the US, California's Proposition 65 law even classifies cadmium as a substance requiring consumer warning, prompting many coffee brands sold there to conduct their own periodic heavy-metal testing even though it isn't mandated by federal law.
This has real practical significance for Vietnam, since Vietnam currently ranks second in coffee export volume to the EU, behind only Brazil. A technical regulation like a cadmium limit isn't a distant concern in some small niche market — it sits right at the center of one of the coffee industry's most important export markets.
Why the Basaltic Soil of the Central Highlands Deserves Attention
Most of Vietnam's Robusta coffee is grown on basaltic soil — red soil formed from volcanic rock, concentrated in the Central Highlands. This is the same volcanic geological group as the South American coffee-growing regions that have been internationally documented as having higher natural cadmium risk. This doesn't mean Vietnamese coffee is necessarily at risk of cadmium contamination, and there is currently no published data showing that it is. But sharing the same at-risk geological group is a reasonable basis for proactive monitoring and early control, rather than waiting until the problem actually emerges before addressing it.
No Crisis Yet, But This Is the Time to Prepare
Unlike durian, Vietnamese coffee has so far not recorded any large shipment being flagged or returned for exceeding the cadmium threshold. But the EU regulation has already existed for some time, meaning this risk isn't something that could happen in the distant future — it's a technical threshold that exists in parallel with daily export activity right now. A cautionary example is the cocoa industry: when the EU tightened cadmium regulations for chocolate starting in 2014, it forced many South American cocoa-exporting countries to overhaul their entire production processes to comply. Controlling Cadmium Starts With Soil and Inputs
The mechanism for controlling cadmium in soil is similar to what was discussed in the earlier article on durian: acidic soil makes cadmium more mobile and easier for roots to absorb, while raising soil pH closer to neutral helps bind heavy metals more tightly in the soil. Choosing fertilizers with controlled cadmium content — starting from the source ore itself — is also part of the equation for reducing the risk of introducing additional cadmium into farmland.
Vietnamese coffee still has time to proactively prepare before cadmium becomes as urgent an issue as it has already become for durian. The point isn't to panic over a regulation that has existed for a long time, but to properly recognize its relevance and prepare accordingly, starting now.
