Many farmers cultivating on hilly land for years have noticed a gradual decline in yield despite fertilizing regularly, and often attribute it to aging plant varieties or unpredictable weather. Signs that soil is becoming acidic

Stunted, slow-growing plants despite fertilizing at the correct dosage is the first sign worth noting. Leaves, especially young ones, often show yellowing patches between the veins because the plant struggles to absorb certain nutrients even when the soil is not actually deficient. Root systems develop poorly, with few feeder roots, making plants prone to toppling and less drought-tolerant. Each rainy season, water running across the surface of sloped land carries away the nutrient-rich topsoil, including calcium and magnesium, the two elements responsible for neutralizing soil acidity. As these alkaline elements gradually diminish, acidifying ions such as aluminum and iron become dominant, making the soil more acidic over time. Applying acid-based fertilizers over many years, such as superphosphate or ammonium sulfate, also accelerates this acidification process if nothing is done to replenish the soil's alkalinity.

A simple way to measure soil pH at home

The quickest method is to use litmus paper or a common handheld pH meter, costing only a few hundred thousand VND, by mixing a small amount of soil with water in the ratio specified in the instructions and measuring directly. Soil with a pH below 5.5 is considered acidic and needs improvement before increasing fertilizer amounts is even considered. If no equipment is available, farmers can bring soil samples to their local agricultural extension station for testing and advice.

The role of alkaline minerals in soil improvement

Calcium and magnesium help neutralize acidity, gradually raising soil pH over the course of use. What sets fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer apart from ordinary lime powder is that, beyond reducing acidity, it also supplies phosphorus, magnesium, and silicon in a single application, instead of having to apply lime and phosphate fertilizer separately. Improving acidic soil is a long-term process that requires periodic application across many crop cycles — it cannot return to normal after just one application.

How to effectively improve sloped hillside land

Applying fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer regularly each crop cycle is the most basic step, and it should ideally be applied at the start of the rainy season so the alkaline minerals have time to take effect before heavy rains arrive. Combining this with maintaining vegetation cover or planting cover crops between rows of main crops will significantly reduce the rate of topsoil erosion. For perennial trees, building basins around the base also helps retain water and fertilizer more effectively, preventing them from washing away during heavy rains.
