Basaltic soil in the Central Highlands is generally considered among the best soil types for industrial crops, yet many long-established coffee gardens on this very soil still experience phosphorus deficiency, showing up as poor root development and uneven flowering. Understanding the real cause helps farmers apply phosphate fertilizer at the right time and in the right amount, rather than out of habit.
Why basaltic soil is rich in phosphorus yet plants still fall short
Red basaltic soil has a fairly high total phosphorus content, but most of this phosphorus is locked up by iron and aluminum naturally present in the soil, converting it into a hard-to-dissolve form that plant roots cannot absorb. Plants can only use the readily available portion of phosphorus, which makes up a very small fraction of the total. After many years of cultivation, this readily available phosphorus gradually declines, so even when the soil generally appears fertile, coffee gardens still need periodic supplemental fertilizing.
Three important phosphorus application times during the year
Phosphorus should be applied at three main points. After harvest is when the plant needs to recover its root system following a heavy fruit-bearing cycle. The start of the rainy season is when the plant begins a new growth cycle and needs phosphorus for root and shoot development. Before flower bud differentiation is the most critical point, since phosphorus is directly involved in flower bud formation, determining the number of flowers and the fruit-set rate for the entire crop.

Why fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer suits Central Highlands coffee
Besides phosphorus, coffee plants draw roughly three times as much calcium from the soil as phosphorus, so a fertilizer that supplies both phosphorus and calcium at once saves a separate lime application. Lao Cai fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer contains about 26% calcium and about 14% magnesium, helping coffee plants lower soil acidity while also boosting photosynthetic efficiency to nourish the fruit, which is especially useful during the heavy fruit-bearing stage. Because it dissolves slowly, only in the weak acidic environment at the roots, the fertilizer is not washed away by rain even when applied at the start of the Central Highlands' rainy season.
How to apply it correctly
Fertilizer should be spread along the drip line of the canopy, where feeder roots absorb nutrients most actively, avoiding application too close to the trunk. After spreading, lightly till and cover with a thin layer of soil so the fertilizer makes contact with the soil and roots, improving absorption rather than leaving the fertilizer sitting on the surface.
